Does FOLX offer Relationship/Couples Therapy?

  • Updated

Yes! At FOLX, our therapists understand the unique experiences that can shape LGBTQIA+ relationships. We provide relationship therapy that is affirming, inclusive, and tailored to your relationship—not based on assumptions about what relationships "should" look like.

Below is a brief summary of how we are able to support you.

What is relationship therapy?

Relationship therapy is therapy for partners. While this is traditionally referred to as couples therapy, at FOLX we strive to provide an inclusive therapy for all types of close partnered relationships.

It can be a space to strengthen communication, deepen connection, navigate conflict, and work toward shared goals between partners.

At FOLX, our therapists provide LGBTQIA+-affirming care that recognizes the unique experiences, strengths, and challenges of bisexual, queer, lesbian, gay, pan, trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals and relationships.

Relationship therapy focuses on the dynamics between partners or people in a close relationship and is not Family Therapy, which focuses on the broader family system. FOLX does not currently offer Family Therapy.

Who can participate?

We welcome a variety of relationship structures, including:

  • Couples (married, engaged, partnered)
  • Married or dating partners
  • Open relationships
  • Polyamorous and ethically non-monogamous (ENM) relationships
  • Polycules

What can relationship therapy help with?

Our therapists can support you with:

  • Communication and conflict
  • Trust and intimacy
  • Life transitions
  • Boundaries
  • Gender transition within a relationship
  • Polyamory and relationship dynamics
  • Identity stress and external pressures
  • Strengthening your relationship

*Relationship therapy is not meant for individuals seeking Family Therapy, including co-parents seeking help with parenting.

Do we have to be in a crisis?

Not at all. Many people start relationship therapy before problems become overwhelming. Therapy can be preventative, helping you strengthen your relationship, improve communication, and develop tools for navigating future challenges.

Is FOLX affirming of LGBTQIA+ and nontraditional relationships?

Yes. Our therapists provide affirming care for LGBTQIA+ individuals and relationships, including mixed orientation, polyamorous, open, and other consensual relationship structures.

Will the therapist take sides?

No. Your therapist's role is to support the relationship by helping everyone feel heard, improve communication, and work toward shared goals.

Can therapy help if one partner is transitioning?

Absolutely. Therapy can provide support as partners navigate changes in identity, communication, intimacy, and expectations during a gender transition.

What happens in the first session?

Your therapist will get to know your relationship, discuss your concerns and strengths, and work with you to develop goals for therapy. Together, you'll develop a plan tailored to your unique relationship.

How long does relationship therapy last?

Every relationship is different. Some people benefit from a few solution-focused sessions, while others choose ongoing therapy to work through more complex concerns or continue strengthening their relationship over time.

Do we need to live in the same state to receive Relationship Therapy?

No, you and your partner(s) do not need to reside in the same state, however, each individual does need to be physically located in a state where the therapist is licensed to practice. Many of our Relationship Therapists are licensed in multiple states and may be able to provide care across different locations. Prior to scheduling, please confirm that your therapist is able to provide services based on each participant’s location at the time of the visit. If you do not see your therapist listed in the states you are looking for here, please send us a message.

Do all participants need to have a FOLX membership?

No. Only one member of the relationship needs to have an active FOLX account. However, all participants must be of legal age in their state, provide an ID, and sign an Informed Consent form prior to their first session.

Can I use my insurance?

Not at this time. Relationship/Couples therapy is currently cash pay only - $199/session.
