Starting June 2025, we’ll begin utilizing athenahealth, the service we utilize for your Athena patient portal, to send notifications to you via email and/or text (SMS) message for any balances due on clinical visits where insurance was used. Previously, these notifications and payments were sent through our billing system, Stripe.
This change allows us to provide you with more proactive communication regarding your visit balances. All other billing, which may include membership, visit copays, medication or lab fees, will continue to be managed via Stripe.
Paying for visits with insurance
- When you schedule a visit using your in network insurance, you’ll pay your copay at the time of booking.
- Following your visit, our team will submit a claim to your insurance provider.
- Your insurance provider will process the claim and send FOLX an explanation of benefits.
- You will receive a notification with a billing statement from Athena prompting you to pay your remaining balance.
- The first two statements will be sent via text and/or email based on your notification settings.* If payment isn’t received following the second notice, a physical statement will be sent to your address on file (the method of this third notification cannot be modified).
*Be sure that you’re signed up to receive text and/or email notifications from Athena. Details on how to review and update your Athena notification settings can be found here.
FAQ
When will I receive billing statements?
You will receive your first statement roughly one month following your visit. This timeline may fluctuate pending any follow-ups from your insurance provider. If unpaid, a second and third notification will be sent 45 days apart.
Will my remaining balance for my visit be visible in my FOLX account?
Not at this time. You can view your remaining visit balance(s) in the Billing & Payments section of the Athena patient portal. Invoices for all other services will continue to be visible in your FOLX account.
How do I pay my remaining balance?
Your statement will provide a link to complete your payment online. Alternatively, you can mail a check to the address provided on your statement.
If I update my method of payment in my FOLX account, will that update in my Athena patient portal, too?
No, unlike your contact information where you should only make updates in your FOLX account, your method of payment must be updated by you in each system.
