New York Notice - Risk of Paying for Medical Services with Credit Card

  • Updated

Notice to New York Members:

FOLX allows payment for medical services with a debit or a credit card. You may choose which card type you would like to use when you pay for services. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

What are the risks of paying for medical services with a credit card?

When you pay for medical services with a credit card, the amount you charge becomes credit card debt rather than medical debt. This means you may give up certain state and federal protections that apply specifically to medical debt.

These protections may include:
  • Protections from wage garnishment
  • Protections from reporting medical debt to credit bureaus
  • Limits on interest charged on medical debt
  • Protections from liens being placed on your property
Before choosing to pay for medical services with a credit card, you should consider whether giving up these medical debt protections is right for you.
